Mr Laurie Pearcey, Pro Vice-Chancellor International, University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Mr Neville Roach AO, Patron of the Australia India Institute at UNSW Sydney, takes great pleasure in inviting you to attend the Annual Gandhi Memorial Ceremony followed by the Gandhi Oration at UNSW Sydney on Wednesday 6 February 2019.

The UNSW Sydney Annual Memorial Ceremony commemorates India’s Martyrs Day, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination on 30 January 1948. The Remembrance Ceremony brings together UNSW staff, students, alumni and guests to observe a moment of peace in tribute to Gandhi and is followed by the Gandhi Oration.

Gandhi Oration

UNSW Sydney is delighted to invite you to attend the annual UNSW Gandhi Oration which commemorates the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi and is delivered by a person whose life’s work exemplifies Gandhian ideals. In 2019, the Gandhi Oration will be delivered by Chief Advocate of World Vision Australia Tim Costello.

Since its inception, the Oration has been delivered by Patrick Dodson in 2012, Justice Michael Kirby 2013, Dr Tom Keneally 2014, Ms Ela Gandhi 2015, Mr Peter Greste 2016, Dr Hugh Mackay AO 2017 and Indian Journalist Shoma Chaudhury.

Description

Looking for a fun way to workout? Experience this exciting form of Modern Indian dance combining: Bhangra, Classical Indian, Arabic and Western Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop performed to the latest and hip Bollywood tracks. Each dance class involves: Warm ups and Isolations, Classical Indian Technique, Bhangra technique, Jazz/Funk/Hip hop technique & Choreographed Dance Routines just like you see in the Bollywood Movies.

Our Bollywood Dance courses will have you dancing to the latest Bollywood dance tracks , whilst getting a workout !! You will meet some great people and have lots of fun .

The course ends with a performance at the Holi Festival in Parramatta 17th March & Pendle Hill 24th March.

About the Panellists:

Julie Boon | Superintendent, Corporate Sponsor for Family and Domestic Violence

Supt Boon joined the NSW Police Force in April 1990, two days after turning 22. She originally joined to complete her probationary period as a ‘gap year’ after completing her uni degree – this year, her ‘gap year’ will reach a quarter of a century.

Supt Boon has worked in diverse roles at different LACs and Units, including General Duties, Crash Investigation, and Project Management. She was Police Spokesperson for the Media Unit from 1999 until 2007.

Currently, she is Acting Commander at Mudgee LAC, overseeing all staff and an area covering 24,000 square kilometres.

Moo Baulch | CEO of Domestic Violence NSW

Moo Baulch is chief executive of Domestic Violence NSW, the state peak body for specialist domestic and family violence (DFV) services. She is part of a small team that works to improve policy and practice responses to women, children and communities impacted by violence.

Moo has worked in the non-government, not for profit sector in Australia, South East Asia, the UK and Spain over the last couple of decades. She believes that public awareness of domestic and family violence and sexual assault is at an unprecedented level and that cross-sector and community partnerships are key to the cultural and practical changes required for inclusive support.

She looks forward to the day when all children are taught in schools about the intersections between discrimination, bullying, violence and healthy respectful relationships.

About the Facilitator:

Pallavi Sinha | Academic & Lawyer, Appointed Supporter Joint Federal & State Campaign to stop DV

Pallavi Sinha is a lawyer, Adjunct Lecturer at the College of Law and ANU and a former People of Australia Ambassador. She has completed Economics and Social Sciences and Law degrees with honours from the University of Sydney and works in the areas of immigration law and family law, and has represented asylum seekers and women who have experienced domestic violence.

Pallavi is actively involved with the Australian community, representing the Federation of Ethnic Communities Council Australia as Women’s Committee Advisory Chair and is a former Lifeline counsellor. As a conference host, she speaks about empowerment in relation to the unique needs and challenges faced by women from diverse backgrounds.

Pallavi is also a freelance journalist and was presented an Excellence in Journalism award by the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin in 2015.

Pallavi is a second generation Australian of Indian origin and speaks fluent Hindi.

This course covers Bollywood Styles combining more complex Jazz, Classical Indian, Latin, Arabic, Funk and Hip hop dance moves and technique. The course will assume technique taught in the Mango Beginner Bollywood Courses. You will learn Performance technique, Stage technique and how to give it that wow factor when performing in front of an audience. The course ends with a performance at the Mango Xmas party.

Pre-requisites:

Students must have completed 3-4 Beginner Level Courses or have a minimum of 2 years experience performing in shows in order to be eligible for this course. Students who have not completed 3-4 Mango Dance Beginners courses, must be assessed by Farah Shah in order to be able to enrol for this course. Course Requirements:

Students will be required to purchase 2 costumes per year.

Performance:

Students from this course will perform in events such as Mango shows, Holi Festival, Mind Body Spirit Festival, Bollywood Film Festival, Miss Bollywood Australia, India Australia Friendship Fair, Parramasala, Flash mobs for TV and charity and more…Students from this course may be invited to audition for BOLLYWOOD SPICE .

The course ends with a performance at Diwali Festival @ Parramatta on Sunday 4th November,
