Future/Ancient,Adelaide, Australia

The Yellow Peril Symphony

The Yellow Peril Symphony is a collaborative project between Francesca Mountfort (cello), Mindy Wang (guzheng – Chinese harp) and Joel Ma (synthesizers, samplers and drum machines). TYPS paint a slow-moving, hypnotic audio portrait of stillness and chaos. Described by critics as a ‘future/ancient soundtrack of multicultural Australia’, TYPS incorporates ambient textures, hiphop beats, music concrète, experimental improvisation and traditional Chinese music.

TYPS bridge the worlds of contemporary electronic musical styles, traditional acoustic instrumentation, carefully composed melodies, freeform improvisation and textural impressionistic narrative elements.

Book launch: For King and Other Countries

Join Massey University Press to celebrate the launch of For King and Other Countries: The New Zealanders who fought in other services in the First World War, by Glyn Harper.

New Zealand’s military contribution to the First World War was a massive effort for a small country. The figure most often quoted is that from October 1914 through to October 1918, just over 100,000 New Zealanders embarked for military service overseas. But that number does not include the thousands who served under other imperial flags: with the Australian Imperial Force, British army units, the Indian army, the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the American Expeditionary Force, the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force, the French Foreign Legion, and even the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps. Nor does it include the women who served with other nations’ medical organisations or by entertaining troops. This meticulously researched book details a range of New Zealanders who fought for the British Empire under other flags. They have not previously been included in First World War statistics, and there may be as many as 12,000 of them, 1400 of whom died. From heroes and ratbags to singers and medical pioneers, in For King and Other Countries Glyn Harper tells their stories.

Afternoon Acoustic Kirtan with Brenda McMorrow, Toronto, Ontario , Canada

Afternoon Acoustic Kirtan with Brenda McMorrow

Join Brenda for an intimate, acoustic afternoon as we open our hearts and calm our minds with the melodic sounds of ancient chants, modern melodies and the participatory music making of Kirtan! This is a very special gathering for which only 25 tickets will be available so be sure to register early!

Brenda McMorrow is known for her unique and warmly embracing style of mantra music, in which she blends elements of acoustic folk, world rhythms and ancient Indian chants with a sweetly introspective singer-songwriter’s sensibility. Yoga Journal describes Brenda as having “a knack for expressing the deepest realizations in the sparsest lyrics”. As the spiritual teacher, Ram Dass has said: “Brenda has a gift” and her music has been touching people’s hearts worldwide. With 4 celebrated devotional chant albums, Brenda is a featured artist on the White Swan Records roster, a Colorado label well known for its high-profile yoga-inspired artists like Deva Premal. Brenda has been invited to Festivals and events across North and South America, Europe and Asia as part of her most recent tour schedule.

Kirtan (pronounced keer-tahn) is a practice of Bhakti Yoga (the Yoga of Devotion). It is a call and response form of singing which is expanding throughout North America as westerners discover it’s uplifting, healing and joyous effects. Open to everyone, of all religions or no religion at all, Kirtan is easy to learn and participate in.

Brenda weaves English and Spanish lyrics with ancient mantras, singing simple and beautiful melodies to the crowd and the crowd responds by singing back. Kirtan is a beautiful opportunity for people to come together to open their hearts and chant the many names of the Divine. In Kirtan, the lines between musician and audience are blurred. The audience members play a vital role in the music through their singing, clapping, dancing and the transformative devotional energy that they each bring to the experience.

Brenda explains, “Singing together– chanting the Divine names – encourages our hearts to open and the beauty of our true beings to shine!”
