Book reading and discussion with author Ruby Lal, Ontario , Mississauga, Canada

Book reading and discussion with author Ruby Lal

When it came to hunting, she was a master shot. As a dress designer, few could compare. An ingenious architect, she innovated the use of marble in her parents’ mausoleum on the banks of the Yamuna River that inspired her stepson’s Taj Mahal. And she was both celebrated and reviled for her political acumen and diplomatic skill, which rivaled those of her female counterparts in Europe and beyond.
In 1611, thirty-four-year-old Nur Jahan, daughter of a Persian noble and widow of a subversive official, became the twentieth and most cherished wife of the Emperor Jahangir. While other wives were secluded behind walls, Nur ruled the vast Mughal Empire alongside her husband, and governed in his stead as his health failed and his attentions wandered from matters of state. An astute politician and devoted partner, Nur led troops into battle to free Jahangir when he was imprisoned by one of his own officers. She signed and issued imperial orders, and coins of the realm bore her name.
Acclaimed historian Ruby Lal uncovers the rich life and world of Nur Jahan, rescuing this dazzling figure from patriarchal and Orientalist clichés of romance and intrigue, and giving new insight into the lives of women and girls in the Mughal Empire, even where scholars claim there are no sources. Nur’s confident assertion of authority and talent is revelatory. In Empress, she finally receives her due in a deeply researched and evocative biography that awakens us to a fascinating history.

Canadian Community Arts Initiative is pleased to present the author Ruby Lal in talk in collaboration with University of Toronto Mississauga .

Ruby Lal is professor of South Asian history at Emory University. She is the author of Empress: The Astonishing Reign of Nur Jahan, Domesticity and Power in the Early Mughal World, and Coming of Age in Nineteenth Century India: The Girl-Child and the Art of Playfulness.

CANADIAN COMMUNITY ARTS INITIATIVE is a registered non profit organization working towards development of arts and culture in Ontario. CCAI presents in its annual stream of programs, TD Mosaic Multidisciplinary Arts Festival, TD Rock The Coliseum Indie Music Festival, MISAFF Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival, Cross Pollination artist exchange project, Virsa Visual arts program and many literary, theatrical and arts projects.

Basic Traditional Wood Block Printing Workshop with Autumn

About the Artist
Autumn is the designer-maker and founder of WithAutumn. She started her career in graphic design and advertising, and later moved into f&b after completing a full time professional qualification majoring in modern Asian and Italian cuisines.

With her past experiences, she started WithAutumn with the mission to bring design closer to nature through her mindful choice of ethical and sustainable materials and low-impact processes. She handpicks only natural fibres such as organic cotton, handwoven linen and 100% silk fabric as her canvases and uses non-toxic, waterbased pigments and botanical dyes in her creations. Playing her forte in illustration and design to her advantage, she is able to push boundaries of traditional techniques to achieve modern yet timeless and practical work. She never stops learning, and once she mastered a skill, she would share with anyone who wants to learn in a heartbeat.

About the Workshop
Learn the basics of traditional wood block printing, including how to properly transfer crisp, perfect prints onto fabric and create seamless prints.

We combine traditional Indian wood block printing and contemporary motif designs in this workshop. With the help of skilled craftsmen in India, our designs are carved into quality hard teak wood and made into blocks that can withstand multiple prints. You will get to select from a large variety of wood block stamps and use them to print on a 100% cotton scarf that is soft and breathable ‚Äď perfect for Singapore‚Äôs climate. The scarf measures 2m x 60cm. Once printed, the scarf can be made into a variety of items such as cushion cases, several head scarves, table runner or even a simple blouse! Extra blank cotton scarfs can also be purchased during the workshop too.

What is included in this workshop:
Each participant will get to bring home your choice of wooden printing block and a personalised beautifully printed scarf at the end of the workshop.

Light refreshments with free flow cold drinks will also be provided.Basic Traditional Wood Block Printing Workshop with Autumn
